In order to keep your air con system efficient and well maintained manufacturers recommend that it is serviced every two years. The compressor relies on the refrigerant gas to carry lubricant around the system and to cool the compressor. The refrigerant slowly leaks from the system and therefore lubrication and cooling of the compressor is reduced. This can result in severe damage to the compressor and higher running costs. This work is not usually included in the service schedules and is therefore not normally carried out during standard services. If your system has not been serviced in the past two years then it is most likely overdue.

If you are experiencing unpleasant smells from your air con then it is most likely the result of fungal and bacterial growth within the evaporator in the heater housing. These produce spores and bad smells just like you find in a refrigerator that has been left switched off and with the door shut for some time. They are reported to produce flu like symptoms and respiratory problems particularly in asthmatics. The problem can be remedied inexpensively with specialist treatments.
